SEOUL METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT ORDINANCE ON FACILITATION AND SUPPORT FOR WEARING OF HANBOK

Article 1 (Purpose) The purpose of this Ordinance is to contribute to the succession and development of traditional culture by creating atmosphere which facilitates Koreans wearing Hanbok with pleasure by providing for matters necessary to facilitate the wearing of Hanbok which is Korean indigenous clothing.

Article 2 (Definition) The term "Hanbok" in this Ordinance means Korean indigenous clothing, being traditional garments worn by the Korean people; generally a Korean jacket and pants for a male, and a Korean jacket, skirt, etc. for a female.

Article 3 (Mayor’s Responsibility) The Mayor of the Seoul Metropolitan Government (hereinafter referred to as the "Mayor") shall proactively endeavor to develop and implement measures to facilitate the wearing of Hanbok.

Article 4 (Relationship to Other Ordinances) Except as otherwise provided for in other ordinances, this Ordinance shall apply to facilitation and support for the wearing of Hanbok.

Article 5 (Encouragement for Wearing of Hanbok) The Mayor may encourage autonomous Gus, educational and administrative institutions, private enterprises, etc., under the jurisdiction of the Seoul Metropolitan Government to promote the wearing of Hanbok.

Article 6 (Traditional Festive Days and Important Events) The Mayor shall proactively endeavor to encourage citizens to wear Hanbok more often on the traditional festive days, such as seollal (Korean New Year's Day) and chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day); and on important events held on national holidays, etc.

Article 6-2 (Traditional Cultural Events and Festivals) The Mayor shall proactively endeavor to encourage expert participation and earmark budget properly in order to study historical evidence of clothing and revive it at traditional cultural events and festivals.

Article 7 (Preferential Treatment of Persons Wearing Hanbok) The Mayor may exempt or reduce an admission fee, etc. payable by persons wearing Hanbok when they use a performing arts facility, exhibition facility, cultural facility, or historic site established and operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, on traditional festive days, national holidays, etc.

Article 8 (Development and Support) (1) The Mayor may foster the industries involved in manufacturing and marketing Hanbok in order to facilitate the wearing of Hanbok.
(2) The Mayor may subsidize cultural events for facilitating the wearing of Hanbok, and organizations which endeavor to facilitate the wearing of Hanbok, from the budget of the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Article 9 (Official Commendation) The Mayor may officially commend organizations or persons who have rendered distinguished services for facilitating the wearing of Hanbok pursuant to the Seoul Metropolitan Government Ordinance on Official Commendation.
